A townhouse is considered to be a type of home that is attached or part of other similarly owned homes in a housing complex or townhouse units. A townhouse is usually privately owned and the townhouse units are connected to but still separated from other townhouse units by a wall that will have no shared doors or windows so that nobody else can pass through or look in to. A townhouse owner is usually responsible for the payment of the real estate taxes, maintenance, and any repairs of the property. A townhouse can either be a two or three story complex where a townhouse owner will own the physical structure and some part of the common area surrounding the townhouse complex.
There can be some advantages and disadvantages to owning a townhouse. Some of the advantages to owning a townhouse could be the affordability that a townhouse offers compared to a single family home, the majority of townhouses are available closer to the city for those people who want to be in the heart of the happenings around town, and there are usually a ton of amenities that are included in the ownership of a townhouse. Those amenities could include a gym, swimming pool, tennis courts or a trash removal service. There also can be some disadvantages to owning a townhouse and those could include the financing of a townhouse is usually harder to get compared to a single family home because lenders will typically not finance any new lending for townhouses if they find out there are too many investor owned properties or if there are too many overdue fees that are owed in the townhouse complex. Another disadvantage to owning a townhouse is the noise that could be associated with townhouse living. Townhouse units are typically closer together than single family homes and that may attribute for the noisiness of townhouse units. Finally, one last disadvantage of owning a townhouse is the size of a townhouse may be smaller compared to a single family home and since some townhouses don’t have access to a garage, basement, or attic, then storage may be a further issue that many potential townhouse owners will need to consider.
